Artist Statement

My name is Monique Chavez and I am the founder of Scatterbrain, an event-driven platform created to display the talents of those around me. I am 24 years old and proud to be a Hispanic, independent woman representing my people in any way I can. I was born and raised on the Southside of Tucson. While I was never really around the art scene, I found inspiration in everything. I take pride in where I come from and who I am today. “Ordered Chaos” describes a complex situation or process that appears chaotic while having enough order to achieve progress or goals. I feel that this is exactly where I am in my life right now, or always have been. My work is primarily mixed media and collage on wood. A lot of my art is very edgy and rip and tear, but I like it like that. My work ranges from 6 ft installs with barbed wire and chain-linked fence, to collages in the tiniest picture frame you can imagine. To this day, collage is my favorite medium because you never really know where it may lead you. Each piece has a mind of its own. Scatterbrain is a platform I’ve made to display the talents of those around me and for me to network with others. From hosting events, curating shows, and creating my own art — to talking with and inspiring others — Scatterbrain is everything and anything. I am not envious of others; my intentions are very pure and genuine. I am an impulsive, hyperactive, powerful, risk-taking character. I made Scatterbrain initially as a website just so I can chill out and behave. I don’t know how to stay in one place for more than two hours, let alone be quiet. I like calling the shots and I never hesitate. At the end of the day, you are in control of your time and are more powerful than you think. I taught myself to keep going and never hide, no matter how hectic things get.
